That’s what config files are for. It would be a nightmare to hardcode weight and balance and have to recompile the HUD every time you change the loadout or refuel the plane.

Most code, algorithms, etc are not any more sensitive than the concept of desks and file cabinets. No, guidance programs for missiles probably shouldn’t be put on GitHub, but there’s a reason RSA and other encryption algorithms were open sourced. It’s better to have more eyes looking for inefficiencies, weaknesses, and vulnerabilities than to just assume it’s good because no-one on the team responsible is smart/engaged enough to find them.

A lot of functionality can be decoupled from anything that needs to be classified. A HUD is a HUD and no one should be hard coding in performance characteristics of the F-35 into it. I’ve also worked on government projects and holy crap does the code quality vary wildly, even before you get into “it’s still working so deal with the problems, it doesn’t have the budget for updates”.

Using ‘off the shelf’ parts/code can save significant time and money. There’s a reason subs use xbox controllers. Government websites and data interfaces at the very least should have the audit-ability that open source provides.

I think it would be interesting to have some kind of global archive. Even if descendants don’t care “now” has the potential to be the beginning of the best documented era in history. Historians would kill for photographs by random average people from any other time.

Every vehicle doesn’t need to do everything. Otherwise we’d all buy turbocharged Hummers with a trailer for extra fuel. It’d be nice to have some middle ground between a smartcar that confined to surface streets and something you’d take a roadtrip in. A worst-case ~150-200 mile range is enough for a boatload of people to commute 50 miles and not have to worry. If you can plug it in overnight, even on just 120v, charging speed is a negligible concern.

I think a lot of range anxiety is weird. A lot of gas cars from the 80s/90s/00s have ~300/400 mile range per tank, but that’s because you don’t want to go to a gas station every day. If you could just trickle in gas overnight they could’ve had much smaller tanks too.

The little Ford EV hatchback they sell in Europe is a lot more attractive than a Tesla personally. I just wish we could get them in the US, but the CEOs have apparently decided by fiat (hah) that no small cars are desired.

That they used a generative program to do it and the Judge allowed the video to influence the sentence as if it were a statement by the deceased is deeply troubling.

I was averaging ~1-2% blocked using the firebog and a few other lists, I also have ublock origin on everything I can. Added hagezi’s ‘pro plus’ list last month and it’s up to 39% blocked.

A Maverick is a light truck in much the same way a 737 is a small plane. Sure there are bigger ones, but it’s a 4 door truck with a 4 foot bed that’s high enough to make loading and unloading harder than it needs to be. It’s twice the weight and almost twice the size of a 70s/80s Toyota Pickup, which is a light truck.

They “work” in much the same way having a big dude standing over the questioner’s shoulder playing with a crowbar works, they sometimes make the person being interrogated nervous. That’s it. They’re about as accurate and well regarded as phrenology.

And even if they did, it doesn’t matter.

“But they have an iPhone / Computer / Telephone / Refrigerator” is a very tired trope about how people shouldn’t complain. None of those are luxury items anymore and, even if they were, someone prioritizing getting one doesn’t mean they aren’t struggling. A used or prepaid iPhone/smartphone is <$100 and necessary for even the lowest jobs and assistance programs and far more available and useful than a full computer.

Public institutions need and deserve public funding.

It’s possible there was a lab leak, and relevant labs should be investigated for the same reason we investigate all plane crashes, it either leads to finding gaps in processes or confirms whether or not a systemic issue was a factor. The probability has decreased as COVID has been further researched and shows more markers of a ‘natural’ development, but it’s generally beneficial to have a comprehensive audit when processes are in question.

That’s not what these people are arguing. They’re arguing that it’s China’s fault and not Trump’s. That’s it. For that to be the case it ‘must’ be a lab leak, and so they’re retroactively finding justification for how that is possible. That they’re running parallel to a reasonable line of logic for a portion of their argument does not validate their argument.
