  • OK, in broad terms you want a distro that is reasonably up to date, but doesn’t have to be bleeding edge.

I run Mint Cinnamon and Arch KDE for the limited gaming I do, they both work perfectly fine.

Almost all games that have a Linux port will have the support & requirements specified for Ubuntu, which has a KDE flavour, however most people won’t recommend Ubuntu (for good reasons). An Ubuntu derivative with the issues removed however is a decent choice: Mint or PopOS.

Mint is by a long way the most recommended Linux distro for beginners and for good reason - the install process is easy, the community is supportive, and it does pretty much everything straight out of the box.

Cinnamon desktop environment is customisable, not as much as KDE. If you’re really keen on sticking with KDE then either EndeavourOS (which is basically a bundling of Arch so it’s easy to install) or KDE Plasma - which is Debian based but more up to date than Sid I believe.

I don’t recommend Arch for beginners unless you’re highly technical and willing to RTFM.

Most windows games will work in linux via proton/wine etc. You’re Your only really blocked ones are the couple of companies that insist on kernel anti-cheat and are anti-Linux (EA I think ?) it’s a handful of AAA games that are locked out.

Generally you don’t need any hardware changes nowadays, in fact it’s often the other way around - stuff that W10 & 11 no longer support can often be made to work on linux. AMD & Intel GPUs are less troublesome than Nvidia, but it’s generally not a big deal anymore.

Reddit’s /r/linuxgaming has fairly reasonable people (for reddit) and a fairly deep archive that will allow you to search for the specific games you most play, and ways to get them running.

  • Agree totally. The entry wound is going to be 30cal sized. It’s the exit that’s the question. If it’s a solid there’s no way a 30-06 slug wouldn’t have kept going and hit something else (like the people behind him), if as was suggested it was a hollowpoint then in my experience the exit wound is going to be several inches in diameter (based on deer and pigs) on a human neck that means at least half his neck would have disappeared.

Neither of those two things happened on the video, hence me doubting the calibre.

On what I saw I’d be guessing 243, or 30-30 maybe even 300 blackout if we hadn’t seen a rifle pic, if the pictured rifle is correct than 300 BLK is way too new.

Anyway, pure speculation as a hunter based on my experience with animals. Just doesn’t match what I’ve observed.

  • Broadly agree with everything you said, and well spotted to pick this one - it certainly has the “sound” of authenticity, the level of detail def gives a bit of confidence.

I’d note that he said “With a new barrel, the rifle could be chambered in anything from .218 to .458. The claim of .30.06 is possible and likely correct.” so he’s just accepting the 30-06 because that’s what’s reported (which in the absence of evidence to the contrary is not unreasonable).

Then again, the other question is whether it actually was the weapon used - we can’t trust this administration as far as they can be thrown.

The bolt handle being changed is entirely plausible, I could see my father pulling out the oxy-acetelene and bending a handle he wasn’t happy without into a better shape. So the sort of guy comfortable doing a barrel swap and furniture replacement wouldn’t be too bothered doing that.

  • Rem 700 is a good guess, my thought was Ruger American - it doesn’t match the current model of either perfectly but as you say a 20 or 30 year old model will often be different, and yes no piccatinny rail in that pic.

Based on the exit wound shown in the video I doubt it’s 30-06 to be honest - I think your guess of a .270, or maybe .243 would be my guess, particularly given how popular those two were 30 years ago for hunting. I guess could be .308 but as per other post in the thread the sort of damage I’d see on a pig or deer just doesn’t line up with what I’d expect a 30-06 to do and still light even for 308.
