  • Raccoons will get into anything and everything if they’re determined, and those little chubby dudes ARE determined.

I live in Toronto, Canada and the city at one point rolled out compost bins with locks on them for the sole purpose of keeping the Trash Pandas out. It didn’t work. They figured out how to unlock them and get into the food inside. The mom raccoons would teach their babies how to unlock them. They also like to make friends with household cats in hopes of getting some of the cats food. a couple of neighbourhood raccoons made friends with my two cats for this purpose. they would sit at the patio door and chirp back and forth with each other obviously plotting how they could all collectively feast on my food.

they’re lucky they’re cute, they use it to their advantage.

I use NixOS myself and I love it, i’ll never use another distro again. plus with distrobox I don’t even need to use another distro, I already have all the major ones on my NixOS System.

If you do decide to go the Nix route keep in mind there’s really no right nor wrong way to have your system set up. it’s all personal preference. Some people will say flakes are the way to go, some people will say the opposite. Some people like having their system in modules, some don’t. Some like using the home-manager, some don’t. It’s all up to you. All I will suggest though is if you do try Nix set up a Git repo somewhere like on codeberg for it. Just makes things easier.

  • I daily driver QuteBrowser and have for awhile now. I like it. does everything I need it to do and the vim style navigation is awesome.

Sure there are some quirks that can be solved via userscripts and trust me I have a lot written for it but everything that requires an extension in firefox or chrome i have working on Qutebrowser. I don’t get adds with youtube in fact dare I saw I have it set up better than what you could get on Firefox or Chrome, I have my password management via bitwarden, it all just works. And the dev, The Compiler, is great and is always on top of issues that come up.

there’s yet to be any site i’ve come across that just doesn’t work.

  • this is so god damn stupid. If they’re fucking at the literal last step to get citizenship then it’s MORE than safe to assume they already have PR status and a Greencard/Visa. They’ve already passed all the checks, they’ve completed all the steps, they’re paying taxes and working and the US SS is saying "nah fam, you came from the wrong place some 10+ years ago.

Basically it doesn’t matter if you follow the rules anymore. Just dont’ immigrate to the US full stop because there’s no point. And even if you are a citizen you’re no longer protected.

Essentially if you’re not a white, straight (or closeted), christian, male then you’re fucked. Great country you got there.

  • I’ve always said LLMs are fantastic rubber ducks. But taking said rubber duck and telling it to build something end to end or hitting tab without verifying anything is going to lead you to a world of hurt. the person doing it won’t know the world of hurt is coming because they simply don’t know any better. the company won’t know the world of hurt is being built around them because like the vibe coder they dont’ know any better.

then suddenly it’s finished, pushed to production, and there’s your world of hurt.

but hey I get paid to fix said world for them so keep on trucking I guess. at this rate I’ll be retiring by the end of the next year.

if you have the time for it, then go for it.

Keep in mind and i’m sure you already know this but you have to compile everything yourself so it WILL take time. I have it on a sort of hobby machine and I remember just getting Firefox to compile/install took awhile. The benefit of this is you get an extremely custom tailored system for yourself. But like I said it’s going to take you awhile to get to that point. If you want something immediate to daily drive and want more of a custom system as opposed to Arch then maybe give NixOS a shot. I switched from Arch to NixOS on my main machine and I love it, won’t use anything else. But if you’re patient and have the time to dedicate to Gentoo then go for it, it’s fun to play around with on a Saturday afternoon.

  • that actually reminds me of a buddy of mine that moved to Canada from Arizona. He kept using his Arizona ID for awhile and whenever we’d go to a bar (we were in our early 20s at the time) he’d always get grief because of his Arizona Drivers License. they’d be all “this expires in 2060? this has to be fake” and every time he’d have to explain to them how Arizona drivers licenses work. got to the point where he just had to switch for an Ontario one just to save him the hassle. He even said if he was in another state in the US they’d still give him a hard time over it.

  • After trying out the alternatives to spotify I simply didn’t like any of them. Either other services didn’t have artists I liked or their players were horrible.

Instead I simply set up navidrome on my server, used a soulseek script to convert my youtube and spotify playlists to download all my music to my server, and then opened up said server to myself and my friends/family. So now they can all stream for free AND if they want they can easily add music to the server. Which is fantastic because now I’m discovering new bands and artists without any effort. Just shuffle all my tracks and “oh that’s new” because my buddy added it and it’s really good. Plus the various apps for both PC and mobile are way better than what I was using before.
