Sounds like SEE (single event effect) if it’s something fixable by software.

TID (total ionizing dose) is another flavor of radiation effect on components, but that’s a total lifetime effect where it slowly degrades. Using rad hard parts or adding extra shielding is the main fix.

SEEs are transient effects from high energy charged particles that can cause bit flips and latch ups in circuitry depending on where the particle hits and deposits it’s charge in the circuitry. Extra shielding can help prevent these as well, but they can also be mitigated in software, sometimes the fix is just error detection, or power cycling a specific section of circuitry to clear a latchup

But they gotta save us from eternal damnation, it’s for our own good, we don’t know any better (/s if it’s really needed)

My 2011 MacBook pro is still chugging along thanks to Linux.

I upgraded 4GB RAM to 16GB, upgraded the HDD to SSD, and replaced the CD drive with a second SSD. Sadly the screen is almost completely gone, occasionally intermittent, probably a cable gone bad, not sure, but the mini display port is working fine for an external monitor.

I just googled “how to lick a drill press” and sadly the AI response is that I shouldn’t do it because it’s dangerous. Keep trying!

Yea I’m running a much leaner Debian on my laptop now. Base OS was very bare, slowly adding only what I need because it’s a 2016 laptop and noticeably slower on some more bloated OSs

Whatever Ubuntu was available in 2015. I only dabbled in Linux over the past 10 years. More seriously switching over in the last year or so.

I have Unraid as a server OS (Debian slackware based, running a lot of docker containers and a couple VMs). Debian on my laptop. And Bazzite (fedora based) on my Lenovo Legion Go.

Still need to swap my gaming PC from windows. May try Bazzite on that as well. I’ve also tried Mint, Manjaro, and Zorin
