  • Any service or tool with obvious genAI in its branding or the developer’s profile is an instant “no” from me. Linkwarden is a big one. Any advertisement post clearly written by an LLM I’ll avoid like the plague. If you’re willing to use hallucinations based on theft that use unbelievable amounts of water and energy, then I’m flat out not going to trust that your software has any value.

Also seen a handful of random tools with “Proudly made in the USA” or some garbage on the readme, and sure enough the developer always follows all of today’s big fascists on social media. Shocker.

I initially set up my dual boot with 1 TB to Windows, 3 TB to CachyOS, since I planned to commit to it but wanted the space on the windows side just in case. I’ve shrunken it down to 250GB and that’s where it’s staying.

I’m this close to just wiping out the dual boot entirely, but it is convenient to have around once every few months for some odd reason or another

  • This is what I ran into when I first decided to try a linux system desktop after ten years. I wasn’t familiar with the new distros around these days, so decided to try Bazzite first. Immediately ran into a driver issue that was apparently not fixable until the (already released) fix made its way into their official repo or something.

Shelved that and gave CachyOS a try (made more sense anyway since I used arch in college and had a steam deck since day 1), and it’s been my daily driver for 6 months now.

  • On the peripheral end, ElGato. You can usually get their stuff to work but they provide little to no support, usually have issues to work out, and you’ll always be relying on third party replacements for their software.

I got a stream deck plus with the xlr dock, since even though I quit content creation I like what it provides and have no reason to downgrade my mic, but the thing has been a headache and a half ever since I switched to cachyOS.

  • Setting a home server this year made me realize this. I had nothing but a synced google drive (which I’ve since migrated to a restic-backed nextcloud instance). Literally nothing else.

Now I have full regular snapshots of both my server and my desktop, routine backups to a cloud bucket, and a large external hard drive I manually back up my media library to once a month.

I still want to set up snapshots for my desktop. I do have restic backing up basically everything but cache folders and game installs right now, but if I need to do a full system restore that’s not going to cut it.

  • Exactly what I use. 1 TB Backblaze B2, Backrest running on my main server, my NAS, and my desktop. I should honestly probably set it up on my steam deck too for the hell of it.

Small daily backups from my servers of configs and such, bigger weekly backups from the server and the desktop.

Backing up the entire media library to a cloud service is out of the question, so I (plan to) run a manual job from each machine to an external HDD once a month, primarily as a media backup but may as well put everything there that matters, and then I shove the drive into my storage unit for a bit.

(I say “plan to” because I just got the NAS set up this past week and used this external drive for the initial media transfer, I’ve set up the jobs but haven’t run them yet)
