Just tell them the truth.
Children, I voted for your mother to be treated as a subhuman and we all got what I voted for. Don’t you dare throw me into an asylum!

It was inevitable. What did you all expect from the country that hoarded all that nazi gold?

Firefox forks are real. They are also on mobile.

Cold take: we need to stop chasing web Standards that are purposefully set up by big corpo to be exlusionary.
What we need, what Firefox could hope to be, is a browser developed for a new old internet paradigm. Maybe Gopher, or Gemini (the good one). Alternatively a purposefully reduced HTML+CSS, no JS.
Trim down the fat so that it is actually possible to finance the development of a web engine an browser without leeching on a dick corpo (and sabotagong open internet in the process).

Question. Does it have uBO or an equivalent yet?
Without it, it’ll simply not be internet-ready.

The forks are Firefox with their own leadership. I have had pretty good experience with Librewolf.

Rooted/Custom ROM users are so tiny,
That’s what I told her to tell you.

So, help break the circle. You can target any of the nodes you mentioned.
None of the technologies that are abusing the network effect today started with a full charter of users.

That’s true of anything in technology (that is not designed to last; see: typewritrs and radio still work), so not really a variable. By that poiont you’ll either have a dedicated “updated” phone for current-gen slop, or have shifted over to a more private stack, or even have gone fully off-grid.

Why do I feel like narrowing down the options would not be that bad?
Perhaps because you miss Microsoft or Apple? In a rather misdirected way?
Half the point is there are multiple ways to do things - and mind, Windows is like that too (you can get to some settings though the new Control Panel, the old Control Panel, the Regedit, the Powershell…). Just about the only thing in Windows you are forced only one vision of is the desktop itself, but as soon as you double-click an icon, all bets are off.
Also if what you want is getting behind “tried and tested, universally accepted technologies”… that’s what sysvinit, ALSA, X11 and automake / build-essentials; no need for systemd, Pulseaudio, Wayland and Snaps. Pulseaudio was basically a stillborn deformed baby whereas I’ve never seen ALSA fail since 2002 (to the point even today I have to “fix” Flatpak not having audio on Pipewire unless Pulseaudio sits behind it by just seating both of them behind ALSA). I don’t even have to begin on Wayland, it started as just vaporware; Systemd is largely an attempt to microsoft-ize Linux system management; and Snaps make me want to snap.
As for newbies… others have addressed the point but honestly, if someone gets scared and whiny at the “choose your starter” screen of the game, they’re not gonna last any in a Pokémon game nor would I want them around whining about things they couldn’t even be bothered to be here for.

a decent chunk of coding is stupid boilerplate/minutia that varies
…according to a logic, which means LLMs are bad at it.

Well, the first and obvious thing to do to show that AI is bad is to show that AI is bad. If it provides that much of a low-hanging fruit for the demonstration… that just further emphasizes the point.

TRAITOR ALWAYS CHICKENS OUT!

on devices running Android 13 or later.
Sounds easy then: stay on the latest Lineage that does not incorporate A13.
While I wouldn’t say Google is actively hostile towards these power users,
Author is obviously sold out. Are they even trustable?
Oh thanks for re-teaching me that one! It’s been far too long since I last used French reallistically. Even tho it’s better that I took that than German, otherwise I’d understand the ich_iel memes which would make them lose half their charm.
faux pas
Not much of a “faux” pas. Not only did he double down on it, but the board supported him.
From the 404media article on the subject:
The Distilled announcement post says the company made the choice to shut down these products because “it’s imperative we focus our efforts on Firefox and building new solutions that give you real choice, control and peace of mind online.” It also says the choice will allow Mozilla to “shape the next era of the internet – with tools like vertical tabs, smart search and more AI-powered features on the way.” Which is what everyone wants: more AI bloat in their browsers.
(The monkey paw turns, and) we got our wish.
Not really conductive as long as most funds are siphoned by the C-suite ranks. Get rid of the C-fat first, maybe even turn Mozilla into a co-op, then have the People fund it.
