Sadly this is poised to probably be worse than the previous given that Trump and Republicans keep adding fuel to the fire. We’re literally just starting to see the tip of the iceberg and they are continuing to charge forward with the policies that are causing the economic crisis.

Yeah, that’s something I feel like is being taken out of context. It’s the getting the explosives within range of the planes that was impressive to me. They could have had mortars/rockets/etc. and probably done similar damage at that range.

I’m sure drones increase the success rate, but it wasn’t drones that made that operation a success from my understanding.

I tend to lean more towards the problem being distribution rather than creation, so I’m curious about your opinion on this: Is there a difference between me imaging a sexual act with someone without their consent vs writing/drawing/deepfaking it?

I tend to see the big issue in having people too far removed from the investment/risk rather than the ratings themselves. Which is why I call out the bundling as securities.

No one at the time thought the ratings were bad because they bundled good and bad mortgages and were accounting for default rates. However, spreading the risk of mortgage assets to every financial institution meant there was no escape when the housing market burst.

The real issue with 2008 is that the mortgages were being bundled and sold as securities. So lots of financial institutions (even those disconnected from mortgage markets) were all holding these toxic assets without anyway to unload them.

With Klarna, I suspect that most risk is with them and their stockholders.

There are three top credit rating agencies and this was the final one to downgrade the US. First one was under Obama in 2011 due to Republicans playing games with the debt ceiling. Then in 2023, but I’m not sure why. And now it’s due to continued brinkmanship, but I think primarily due to Trumps impact to current and future health of us.

I mean it is one of the premiere educational institutions in the world. I imagine they’re looking for some of the best people to run the school and that has a cost.

Also, unlike CEOs or for-profit companies, his compensation is probably his own income (from the school).

Vesting generally requires there to be some asset you become entitled to. In private companies that’s stock, but Harvard is a non-profit (and a school) so I don’t think they have any equivelant.

Looking online, it does seem likely there are bonuses and other forms of compensation. But I think agreeing to take a pay cut is him trying to do right, or at least indicate that he’s willing to take a hit too.

Pretty much anything handling unstructed data (audio, video, text) is using training data that has copyrighted content.

This is more about the type of ID you need mixed with the cost/effort of acquiring that ID.

Essentially, changes to ID laws impact voting by:

• Making voting cost money - the government doesn’t provide these IDs for free
• Making voting cost more time - getting theses IDs may require people (especially women who have changed names) to spend time navigating the beuracracy to get all the documents they need for the new ID requirements

At the end of the day, voting should be free and people shouldn’t be penalized for how they do it. These kinds of laws try to make voting time intensive and expensive, meaning many people may not be able to vote.

I always wonder how many of these are actually just patches behind the scene to fix viral trends. Or even more devious, they use the viral trends to patch a specific failure point to make it feel like progress is being made.

I also think the article mentions there are millions more at risk of being in debt, but that’s a whole other can of worms cause (as is the case with Trump and Republicans) communication about loan repayment is unclear.

I think the real point of the adage, “once it’s on the internet it’s there forever” is more about the fact that you, personally, can’t take it back. Someone might of screenshot, downloaded it, reuploaded it elsewhere. The real meaning being that, once it’s on the internet, you no longer control it. Which I think still holds true, but it definitely was heavily implied that it would be there forever.
