You’re right about turn signals.
A lot of people have “target fixation” and telegraph their moves somewhat. I look at where the car is tracking in the lane and what their head is doing (if I can see it). Most people drift left or right on the highway before they change lanes, exit, or turn. It’s no excuse for bad manners, but it helps.
IMO, the big problem is just a matter of standards and practicality. The bar for a DL is “can operate a vehicle” and not “can safely drive a vehicle in public for extended periods of time.” I agree with periodic re-licensing though; everything else called a “license” seems to need that for a host of reasons.

That’s exactly what it feels like. I installed Social Fixer on my browser(s) to make FB at least usable for the few times I have to touch it for event coordination. People ask me what that’s like and I simply say: “Oh, it’s boring now. I only look at status updates for a few minutes and go do something else.” The pull to go back is just… gone. It’s as dull as LiveJournal ever was, and frankly, it’s better this way.
What did I strip out of the feed? Everything that wasn’t generated directly by someone on my friends list. That’s all it took. All the “engagement” is either artificially injected into your feed, or clickbait people pass along because their feed isn’t filtered.
It’s already kind of happening. The Curl project is having a really bad time. No idea if the “bug” submissions are themselves automated, but the content of the filings are pure AI nonsense.
Honestly, just combining alcohol with acetaminophen/paracetamol will do a number on your liver. Or just skip the alcohol. That stuff is in everything these days - no need to get crazy with “supplements.”
This is the way. The key is to ignore the clickbait, politics, low-effort content, and sensational bullshit, and just go after stuff you really like.
There’s even videos for every schedule. We seem to be back to 30-50 minute videos these days, but there are still some micro channels around. Like “Sandwiches of History”, where every video is at most two minutes.
I’m all for it. Real talk though: at what point do we consider re-basing the dollar? I get that we’re nowhere near that now, but I’m guessing it’s at the “kill the $1 bill” mark?

Another consideration is that it’s probably a part of many LLM training datasets by now. In fact, I’d say the combination of bad moderation and AI have made Stack Overflow less attractive lately.
It’s been a thing since forever, too. People like this have been hounding TV and radio stations about their content since the very start. And that’s with FCC censorship in play, too.
What concerns me the most is what happens when you heap climate refugees on top of this mess. The forecast doesn’t look so great.

These monsters crave power. They see oppressive regimes all over the world, stepping on people in a variety of ways, and think: “yeah, that’s the stuff.”
This is it. This is how mobs operate. A culpable employee is a loyal employee.
As a bonus: his sin isn’t even tied to the organization. So blowing him up would be essentially risk free - a quality hire if there ever was one.

Could you help me understand something? Is this person also… dumb? I don’t mean to be disparaging or judgemental, but I’m trying to navigate all this and I’m having a hard time understanding how someone can lack this much self-awareness and still function in society. For a while now I’ve been paying attention to the way customers are treated, and noticed a kind of symmetry with how the employees of a given business/institution are treated. If you’re seeing one kind of abuse/neglect, the other is very likely to also be the case, because it all comes from the same place.
In the case of Walmart: employees under a rather heavy yoke of part-time-no-benefits-never-unions labor, and customers are given a dis-compassionate choice between poorly made and barely viable goods from dubious origins. It’s not that management/ownership doesn’t care about this or that, it’s that they generally don’t care about people and are grotesque about it. It’s all here.
How… how do they not have a smooth on-ramp for what is basically a straight upgrade to the same service?!
The fact that Ask Jeeves isn’t an AI-only search engine is just beyond me. It was laughable that someone thought to personify a search engine 25 years ago, but now is pretty much the right time for that.
More than zero, which is too many for my taste.
It’s a needle in a haystack, but that’s a really valuable needle. It might actually be worth it.
