  • I watched the first two seasons, and I’ll at least start this one, too, once they’ve all been released.

I read the books ~40 years ago. I wouldn’t re-read them now; I’ve had my fill of Burgerland’s anti-communist Golden Age. I still remember it, though, and I’m glad I read it.

The show deviates from the books in infuriating ways and also in interesting ways. Some of the acting is a’ight and production is so luscious—the enormous spectacle was what kept me from walking away several times. I’ve already abandoned any expectation of fidelity to the books.

What grinds my gears is mostly around the megalomaniacal bastards Seldon & Cyberseldon, and the portrayal of historical materialism psychohistory as mathmagical. In short, the good guys suck but the bad guys are fascinating.

CTRL+M is like pressing ENTER. Kernigan & Pike, 1984: UNIX Programming Enviornment

RETURN is an example of a control character — an invisible character that controls some aspect of input and output on the terminal. On any reasonable terminal, RETURN has a key of its own, but most control characters do not. Instead, they must be typed by holding down the CONTROL key, sometimes called CTL or CNTL or CTRL, then pressing another key, usually a letter. For example, RETURN may be typed by pressing the RETURN key or, equivalently, holding down the CONTROL key and typing an ‘m’. RETURN might therefore be called a control-m, which we will write as ctl-m.
