Thanks! You’re right, it doesn’t make sense. But Norway played it smart with their oil wealth, didn’t they? Tiny country, and there they are lending money to the US.
Go on go on go on go on go on

Who actually owns this debt? Who is getting the interest payments? It seems like every country runs on some kind of deficit - where is all this money coming from?

They’ll be broken down, metal smelted, gems recut if necessary. They’re gone, who cares. It’s not like they were the actual crown jewels, just a few baubles.

I think it may be dawning on them. I’m on an international holiday & didn’t get time to faff about installing Linux before I left. But I discovered the day before my flight that Microsoft has extended its offer of security updates for another year to individuals as well as businesses free of charge, and signed up. Last time I’d looked I’m sure ESU was for businesses only.

The bit that made me laugh was: “ESU enrollment does not provide other types of fixes, feature improvements, or product enhancements.” Phew!
I’ll crack on with upgrading to Linux when I get home, nice little winter project.

Your “Send to Kindle” email address is in your profile details, under devices and apps. In the app (Android) it’s under settings.

Since at some point recently. You can still email files (epub not mobi now) to your kindle, but usb transfer doesn’t work any more.

Is Antifa an actual organisation? I always thought of it as a vague lumping together of leftish people by … well, by people like Trump.
I’m poised… might try a dual boot first.
They can’t convince me to switch to Win 11 because apparently my computer isn’t good enough.

I saw the xkcd comic first and thought it was, you know, a JOKE. https://xkcd.com/3131

I’ve got Zorin on an old laptop and it is definitely easy. I’m going to try that .exe thing!
I’ve never learned about servers - never worked in IT, just a simple old hobbyist. Also never used a Raspberry Pi. But thank you! I might get around to reading up on the topic of servers over the winter. My computer has two drives, the original “spinning rust” and an SSD I installed (so quick! so quiet!). My thought is to keep Windows on a partition until I’m sure I like the distro I’ve chosen.
I have multiple backup drives, from a wee 4Tb Toshiba to a SparQ drive with 1Gb cartridges (a whole gigabyte, how will I ever fill it?). I’m pretty sure I’ve got everything saved, but I’m equally sure there’ll be something I’ve missed.
Why are there Ubuntu haters? I’m on the verge of installing Linux on my desktop and have the Ubuntu pro installer on a thumb drive ready. I’m worried now…
I started out thinking to go with Mint, seems popular, but there was an instruction to verify the ISO image and it was just too complex. https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=291093
I’m already using Linux on an old laptop (Zorin) so I’m not inexperienced, but good lord that’s a faff and a half. I have a life!

“Insurrectionists carrying foreign flags are attacking immigration enforcement officers, while one half of America’s political leadership has decided that border enforcement is evil,” Vice President JD Vance said in a post on X Saturday night.
Big yikes. “Insurrectionists”? Bloody hell.

Neil Stephenson’s “In the Beginning… Was the Command Line” (1999) touches on this. He compares Microsoft to a station wagon vs Linux as a free tank. People keep buying the station wagon because no-one wants to learn how to drive a tank, even if it’s free. (Apple is a luxury car in his analogy.)
My first computer ran on MS-DOS, and I’ve seen Windows hiding DOS deeper and deeper behind the GUI. And now AI… ugh. I’ve been tinkering with Linux on old laptops so I’m ready for the move, it’s just finding the time.

It’s true. A friend asked for help on his new laptop and after a confusing conversation I realised he was upset because the web browser had “lost” his “bookmarks”. No, those aren’t bookmarks, those are shortcuts to your most recent web pages. Looks like you don’t have any bookmarks. Let me show you how to make a bookmark…
He’s not dumb or even inexperienced with tech, he just has a different mindset.

Yeah yeah, I will get round to it, stop bloody nagging me.
In my experience the people in the back have their fingers in their ears and are going “lalalalalala”.
I thought it was interesting that she was ok with all the neighbourhood surveillance until it was used against her.
