Capitalism can work well when it’s coupled into a virtuous circle of funding R&D to create new products and services to increase income to put back into more R&D.

At the moment it seems that a lot of companies are just trying to seek ever increasing rent extraction on existing products rather than investing in trying to innovate and relying on high barriers to entry to keep competition out.

You are forgetting the arcane patterns we have to engrave on them too.

They run their own full OS these days on under powered SoCs to cut costs. All so they can claim to be a “smart” TV until of course the flow of updates stops a year after manufacture and all the apps stop working. Then it’s back to being dumb as well as being a massive security hole on your network.

That was a long winded way of saying you don’t know what Jellyfin actually is or does. Mpv is a client, it only fills the role that the various Jellyfin clients perform and a better comparison would be against a heavier weight media player such as Kodi.

What you suggest works well enough if you have a reliable network link to share CIFS or NFS over, but what do you do when away from home on a rubbish link that doesn’t have bandwidth to stream all your high quality bluray rips? You want transcoding in that situation.

Also, I’m a seasoned Unix sysadmin who knows his way around the cli and I can say with certainty this isn’t for people who know the cli, it’s for people who just want to prove you can do anything from the cli even if suboptimal.

Are you sure that’s many people? Outside of the few tech savvy people I know, most lay people have no clue what h.264/5 are either. They know mp3 and that just means digital music to them.

That isn’t true though, plenty of people engage in creative endevours just for the pleasure of it.

Maybe this channel wouldn’t but as soon as it started relying on other people and platforms there was always the risk those wouldn’t align with the creative message and something would have to give.

Either way the creative control is compromised, just in different ways.

If you are running a business then you should either toe the line with your platform provider or make sure you have alternatives in place to move away from them if you value full creative control.

Exactly. It isn’t clear if duckstations author really has permission from all contributors or rewrote those contributions he didn’t have rights to change the license on. If he didn’t then technically even the latest version is still GPL but it’s fairly murky and I doubt shy sane person wants to fork it and have all that drama.

I think this should have been anticipated after the license change.

I think you hit the nail on the head where this is heading by questioning the final costs. Currently “AI” development is burning through insane piles of money and energy and no one is really paying a significant cost to use it… It’s a loss leader at the moment but it’s unclear if there are many uses for it if it were to be full price. Is it going to be another voice assistant situation where people like usi g it but it’s actually really hard to make any money off it directly?

Frankly I’m horrified that it would go that way and wasn’t aware there were cases like this with sound alike voice actors unless the voice was misleading stated to be of someone it wasn’t.

Do they pay people for use of their voice when they get a cheaper voice actor in who sounds just like them?
