This will date me, but I first developed a hatred for Windoze when they used their monopoly power and political payoffs to illegally crush Netscape. I switched to Linux in 2003 and never looked back.

Sounds like those people who like GNOME but dislike systemd have a choice to make. Most GNOME end users, like me, have no idea what the function of systemd actually is or why we should be concerned, and I’ve been using GNU-Linux for over 20 years. I’m glad there are people much more computer literate than me viewing it as a problem and searching for solutions.

M$ is switching to defense and surveillance software. Once they failed to force their crap OS into the phone market, they knew their monopoly days were numbered on the PC. They are hoping to lock in devs on GitHub, but it looks like that might backfire with their overt push for CoPilot use.

Then what would be the point of using an atomic version?

Call me a Luddite, but I want to retain control over my updates and upgrades. I fear the day that Fedora becomes all atomic, all the time, which I can’t help but think is in the cards

My Fedora PC was 8 years old so the wife bought me a new box for my birthday. I loaded Debian on a whim and now I’m too lazy to switch to Fedora. The laptop has always been my experimental machine where I try different distros. The wife first started her Linux journey with PCLOS/KDE and sees no reason to switch.

Been using Linux for 20+ years, and I’ve found it is the Desktop Environment that matters the most to me. It is the part with which I have daily contact. I have a PC running Debian, another running Fedora, a laptop with openSUSE, all with the same DE. My wife runs PCLOS with a different DE on her laptop, so I instantly revert to the CL rather than spend time searching for stuff.

Been using Linux for 20+ years, and if I’ve learned anything, it’s to wait a couple weeks after a release before upgrading. I avoid a lot of little niggling pro0blems that get fixed after a bit of time.

Do the same thing for CAD software engineers that was done for gamers and gaming. Quality CAD software would move companies to make the switch. Once people use it at work and school, they’ll use it at home. I’m hoping the Chinese government’s move to Linux will lead to their investing in FreeCAD.

You never see it mentioned, but PCLOS is a great Linux starter OS. It was started by Bill Reynolds, TexStar, and is tock solid. It is my go-to when installing Linux for new users because it is extremely stable, has a great community, and avoids anything bleeding edge.

Do they sell ASUS in your area? I bought a 2nd hand 14" Vivobook with a Ryzen 5 GPU and it runs Fedora 42 like a champ. First laptop I’ve ever owned that I don’t worry about overheating. It’s been my chuck-it-in-a-backpack travel machine for two years with no problems.

I think we are looking in the wrong direction. China is the place to watch for an explosive growth of Linux and the exclusion of M$-Mossad. They have committed to replacing Windoze on all government computers and servers with KylinOS by 2026. This is not a city here and a city there, but the entire country. PC and Laptop makers will then offer units with openKylinOS. Not sure if phones will follow suit, or switch to Harmony Next.

I’ve discovered that I don’t much care which distro I’m using, it’s the DE that matters most. I have Fedora GNOME, Debian GNOME, and openSUSE GNOME running on different machines. I can’t really tell much difference until I enter the command line or package manager, and even then, it’s the front end of the command that changes while the backend stays mostly the same. Flatpak has made the difference between distros even fewer.

Slackware users, “Those Arch users are crazy.”

Just another tool in the toolbox. Use it or not, up to the user. I’ve even seen Slackware users who say they use Flatpak to ward off dependency rabbit holes.

I’ve found that any of the top distros work just fine. It’s the Desktop Environment that I interact with most often, so I’d spend some time studying which is most comfortable.
