Interesting. When you say that they show up as a different drive completely, do you mean that their UUIDs change, or that they get mounted at a different point?
Anyway, random disconnection sounds like a hardware issue, maybe a USB brownout, as much as anything else. What’s your connection setup, distro and kernel version?
Eh? I’ve never had a problem with reading NTFS drives in linux, including USB sticks and SATA/USB adapters. Are you just wanting to read them or use them as read/write? Write is a bit more tricky, requiring ntfs-3g, but most reasonable distros come with that nowadays.
Mint. It’s a great, simple, well supported first distro. And last distro, TBH. I know plenty of people like to distro hop as a hobby, but if you just want to use your machine pick a well supported basic distro and stick with it. Mint, Ubuntu, Fedora are all good options, but Mint is really aimed at newcomers.

Ubuntu is good, actually. It has basically the widest out of the box hardware and software support of any distribution, a decent default UI and an easy installer. Its downsides are that it has a reputation as baby’s first Linux so you don’t get any hipster cred and some people don’t like that it uses snap as a package format for some things, including Firefox.
I’m pretty certain the first computer I installed Linux on was a Pentium 75 with 4MB of RAM. I know I ran it on some 486s booting off floppys at work. We were at 10,000 feet and couldn’t trust the lifespan of spinning rust.
It’s not that hard, the 10% was applied, then the reciprocal ones were applied, then delayed except for the ones that weren’t. And then the separate ones on cars and parts, were applied, repealed, and applied again, except for the ones from Canada and Mexico, which are under a different treaty. Except that the ones on Canada are still on, sorta. And the ones on electronics have exceptions, but only from some countries and it covers devices, not parts. Except when it doesn’t. And then the ones on oil and energy are canceled, except some electricity from Canada. Oh, and Israel had theirs canceled. And, of course, this will all change in the next week. See? It’s not that hard. 😜
It’s a cat and mouse game, at best. If you have a tool that can reliably detect AI slop, then that tool can be used as part of the training process to fool the detection tool.

The dev entry point changing like that means that it disconnected and then reconnected, which shouldn’t have anything to do with the specific file system on the drive. That really makes it sound like the drive isn’t getting quite enough power, which causes a brown out, which Linux detects as the drive getting unplugged and coming back, which is why it gets a new dev entry.
A look through the usb logs by using something like usbrip would confirm that.
