The news comes as temperatures are rising across the U.S. and the official start of summer rapidly approaches.

The Midea air conditioners fit in windows and resonated with consumers because of their unique design, which allows consumers to close their window ‘through’ the unit.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said that the recall also includes approximately 45,900 units sold in Canada.

The white air conditioners have brand names including Midea, Comfort Aire, Danby, Frigidaire, Insignia, Keystone, LBG Products, Mr. Cool, Perfect Aire and Sea Breeze. They were sold in three sizes of cooling power: 8,000, 10,000 and 12,000 BTU.

    Oh come the fuck on.

    I bought 2x 8000s and 1x 12000 last night.

Edit: Oh, just the U-Shaped. That’s good. I almost bought one of those. Mine are the old square ones.

And I bought three, because 3 of my air conditioners are full of mold.

You can drill a hole in the evaporation pan. Be real careful not to put a hole in any coils though! And watch what you’re gonna drip onto. Don’t be a jerk about it if you’re in an apartment building. It will have a slight impact on efficiency, but beats tf out of mold

I have one that was affected by the recall. I’m just gonna get the self repair kit and fix it myself. Can’t go summer without an AC.

Individuals who want a refund will need to send the unit back to Midea with a free shipping label or submit a photograph showing that they cut the unit’s unplugged power cord.

Wait, so does that mean anybody willing to splice wires back together (and DIY a fix for the drain issue) gets a free AC unit?

Yes. But they get a free AC unit that could be spreading black mold spores through the air, so maybe not as good as it sounds.

I mean, it sounds like the issue is pretty easily fixable, as they’re offering a DIY kit for it. It just seems like, if you’re handy, you could get both a usable AC and a refund.
